A Promising Start in the Victorian High Country
There is something about the first good snow of the season.
The Victorian High Country already feels like a different world once winter settles in. The air gets sharper, the tracks get quieter and the landscape starts to feel bigger and slower. A bit of snow changes it again. Familiar roads and ridgelines suddenly feel more remote, and even a short trip can start to feel like a proper winter escape.
After a recent run of good snow, it feels like this season might give us a few chances to get out there.
The High Country does not need much to feel special in winter. A clear morning. Mist sitting low in the valleys. Snow caught in the trees. Cold hands. Mud on the boots. That feeling of getting back to the car or camp and being glad you made the effort.
It is not always comfortable, but that is part of the appeal. Winter strips things back a bit. You notice the weather more. You notice the light. You move a little slower, pack a little better and appreciate the small things more than you would in summer.
This year, we are hoping for more early starts, more quiet roads, more snow-dusted ridgelines and more reasons to head north when the forecast looks interesting.
The High Country is good at making a simple day outside feel like something bigger.
