Into the Wild Corners of Wollemi

Into the Wild Corners of Wollemi

Wollemi National Park has been sitting on the edge of our map for a while.

It is a huge part of New South Wales. Rugged, remote in places, and still full of blank-looking spaces that make you want to lean in a bit closer. Deep gorges, sandstone cliffs, thick bushland and long ridgelines give it that feeling of a place you could spend years exploring and still only understand a small part of it.

Lately we have been talking about getting further into the quieter parts of the park. Not just the easy edges, but the areas where the tracks thin out, the days get longer and you have to pay a bit more attention to where you are.

We have not locked in a route yet. At this stage it is still an idea being kicked around over maps, track notes and half-formed plans. A few days away from reception. A bit of rough country. Cold creek crossings, early starts, tired legs and the kind of quiet you only really get once you are a long way from the car.

Wollemi has that pull. It feels close enough to be possible, but wild enough to make you work for it. The kind of place that does not need much dressing up. Big sandstone country, deep bush, long shadows in the gullies and plenty of unknowns.

Some trips start with a booking. Others start with a map left open on the table for a little too long.

This one feels like the second kind.
